Printer Alignment

The Micr line on printed checks must be in a specific location on the checks. The main screen of this program includes the following settings which allow you to move the Micr line up or down and left to right.

Increase the top number to move the Micr line to the right or decrease it move the Micr line to the left.

Increase the bottom number to move the Micr line down or decrease the number to move the Micr line up.

To save check stock paper during the alignment process, you can print the checks on plain paper and lay the check stock on top of or under the plain paper to see if the Micr line is in the correct location. The CheckMagic check stock that we use has a white space at the bottom of the check which includes two faint vertical lines. The Micr line must be centered vertically within the white space and the routing number must be printed between the two vertical lines. A correctly aligned Micr line is shown below.

In the above screenshot the Micr line is centered vertically in the white area and the routing number is between the two faint vertical lines.

It is not normally necessary to use fonts other than the Standard Width Font. However, some printers will print more wide or narrow than they are supposed to. This can cause read errors on some sensitive MICR readers. You can use the MICR Calibration Tool to determine if you need to use a wider or narrower version of the MICR font for your printer. The goal is to print 8 characters per inch. The calibration tool is available on row 7 of the program and uses Microsoft Word to print a page on which you can measure a string of MICR characters using a ruler.
